Nerikoh isn’t lit. It is warmed — a small kneaded pellet of aromatic wood, resin and spice set over gentle heat, giving up its scent so slowly that you lean in to meet it.
Japan has three classical arts of refinement. Two are famous in the West: tea and flowers. The third is incense, and it has been quietly practised for six hundred years.
Not a special-occasion incense. This is the one that sits in the cupboard and gets used on ordinary Tuesdays — and it has been Japan’s favourite for over a century.
